Q1. What is an Authorized IRS e-File Provider?

A1. An authorized IRS e-File provider is a tax professional or firm accepted into the IRS electronic filing program. One type of authorized IRS e-File provider is an Electronic Return Originator (ERO). An ERO is a person or firm taxpayers entrust with their tax information for the purpose of filing income tax returns electronically with the IRS.

Q2. How do I e-File my return this year?

A2. To e-File your return, simply send in your organizer and/or your tax information as you normally would. When we finish your return, we will send you a copy of your return to review and Form 8879, IRS E-File Signature Authorization. After you have reviewed your return and verified its accuracy, including any direct deposit information, sign and date Form 8879 and return it to us by hand delivery, US mail, private delivery service or fax (at 301-469-3879). Your tax return will not be filed with the IRS until we receive your signed Form 8879.

Q3. What about my state tax return?

A3. At this point in time, most states participate in the "Federal/State e-File" program. Federal/State e-File transmits both your federal and state returns to the IRS. The IRS then functions as an electronic post office for the participating state (or states), which receives and processes your state electronic return. If you choose to e-File your federal return and your state does not participate in Federal/State e-File, or has other requirements you must meet, we will inform you when we send you IRS E-File Signature Authorization Form 8879.

Q4. Do I have a choice?

A4. Yes. At this point in time, the IRS and most states do not require taxpayers to file electronically. Our goal is to best serve our clients. If for any reason you are uncomfortable with electronic filing, or just plain don't want to do it, we will be happy to prepare your return for regular, paper filing. There is no extra charge to e-File and there is no extra charge not to e-File. Even if you paper file, however, you can have the IRS direct deposit your refund into your bank account.

Q5. Can I change my mind next year?

A5. Yes. At this point in time, the IRS and most states do not require taxpayers to file electronically. Our goal is to best serve our clients. If you e-File this year, and want to return to regular, paper filing next year, we will be happy to accommodate your wishes. Likewise, if you want to paper file this year, but wish to switch to e-Filing at some point in the future, we will be glad to prepare your returns for e-Filing at that time.

Q6. Is it safe?

A6. More than 800 million tax returns have been filed electronically since 1986 with no security incidents to date. The IRS system employs multiple firewalls, state-of-the-art virus and worm detection, and their system is constantly monitored for weaknesses by penetration testing. Your e-Filed return is forwarded over secured telephone lines in a digital format which could not be easily read even if intercepted. And, intercepting telephone transmissions is quite difficult and requires access to phone company major transmission lines. Compared to a paper return, which could easily be identified, misappropriated and read en-route to the IRS, e-Filing is much more secure.

Q7. How will I know if the IRS really got my return?

A7. The IRS will notify us within 48 hours of transmission that your return information was received. We will then send you, depending upon your choice, either an email or a postcard notifying you that your tax return was accepted by the IRS. If for any reason you are still unsure that your return was received, please call us and we can separately verify your return's acceptance.

Q8. Will I get my refund faster?

A8. Yes. With IRS e-File you will receive your refund in half the time. It's even faster and safer if you have your refund deposited directly to your bank account.

Q9. Can I e-File, but get a paper refund check?

A9. Yes. If you are uncomfortable with providing your bank account information for direct deposit of your refund, you can still e-File and receive a paper refund check.

Q10. Can I e-File and still have my refund applied to my estimated tax payments?

A10. Yes. We can electronically transmit your return, and have any over-payments applied to your estimated tax payments, just as with paper filing.

Q11. What are my options if I owe money?

A11. You have several payment and timing options open to you when you e-file.

♦ You can e-File and authorize an electronic funds withdrawal from your checking or savings account. The payment can be scheduled to be withdrawn from your account on or before the return due date and will be reflected as a "United States Treasury Tax Payment" on your bank statement as proof of payment. Please note, however, that an electronic withdrawal cannot be authorized after the return is transmitted. You also should check with your financial institution to be sure that electronic fund transfers can be authorized from your designated bank account.

♦ You can e-File and send in your payment by check with a separate payment voucher. Again, you can pay when your return is e-Filed, or send in your payment on or before the return due date. However, if you mail your check, we advise you to send it via registered or certified mail so you have proof of timely payment.

♦ You also can e-File and pay your taxes on or before the return due date by credit or debit card through an IRS e-Pay service provider, although these providers do charge a fee. For more information, or to locate an IRS e-Pay service provider and pay your taxes by credit or debit card, click here.

Q12. Will I get a copy of the return for my own files?

A12. Yes. We will send you a copy of your return to review and approve before we e-File it for you. After you have approved release of your tax return, and returned your IRS E-File Signature Authorization Form 8879 to us, we will e-File your return. If you wish to go entirely paperless, we can email you a PDF copy of the e-Filed return instead.

Q13. Can businesses e-File?

A13. Yes. Businesses can e-File not only their income tax returns, but also employment taxes (Forms 940, 941, and 944), information returns (Forms 945, 1096, 1099, 1098 and more), partnership returns (Form 1065), corporate returns (Forms 1120, 1120S and more), estate and trust returns (Form 1041), non-profit returns (Forms 990/990EZ, 990PF and more), and retirement plan returns (Form 5500/5500EZ with the Department of Labor).

Q14. Can I e-File my extension?

A14. Yes. Both individuals and businesses can e-File their extensions. However, as with a paper extension, you must arrange to pay any amounts due with your extension.
