♦  Background:

Ava L. Healy joined Healy & Associates, LLC in 2001 after a career spanning 27 years as a finance executive, accountant and tax and business attorney.  Previously she worked at the law firms of Ginsburg, Feldman & Bress in Washington, DC and at Stein, Sperling in Rockville, MD.  In the real estate finance sector she held positions as the Vice President of Financial/Asset Management at The Artery Organization, Inc., a nationally ranked real estate development, syndication, mortgage banking and property management company in Bethesda, Maryland, and as Vice President of Portfolio Analysis at The National Housing Partnerships, at the time the largest national real estate development, syndication and property management company in the United States (owned by Weyerhaeuser and Berkshire Hathaway).  She became a Member of Healy & Associates, LLC in 2005.

♦  Practice Areas/Expertise: 

As a Member of Healy & Associates, LLC, Ava provides technical tax compliance and planning expertise and has overall responsibility for tax and business technology. She oversees the financial, tax and investor reporting for multi-state syndicated real estate partnerships, and builds computerized financial models to interpret and implement the tax and financial clauses of associated entity legal documents. She performs the final review of partnership tax returns to ensure proper treatment of special tax allocations and multi-state apportionment and allocation requirements, as well as providing final review of client financial statements to comply with all current accounting pronouncements. She also prepares and reviews federal and state individual, trust, non-profit and corporate tax returns and is a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor.

♦  Education/Professional Memberships: 

Ava is a graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park, with majors in Accounting (1979) and Zoology (B.S. 1974).  She studied pharmacology for a year (1975-76), but decided she liked finance better having worked as a budget analyst while in school.  She received her Masters of Science in Taxation from the American University Kogod School of Business (1990), and graduated cum laude with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law (1993), where she received the American Jurisprudence Award for academic achievement in Partnership and Agency law.  Ava has also taken a professional development course in Real Estate Portfolio Analysis at the MIT Graduate Center for Real Estate (1989).

Ava is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA).  She is currently licensed to practice law in Maryland, and has previously been licensed in the District of Columbia.

♦  Professional Activities/Publications: 

Ava served as a guest speaker at the District of Columbia 1995 Winter Bar Convention (on Limited Liability Companies) and has been a guest lecturer at the American University School of Law and Graduate School of Real Estate and Urban Development, and at various legal luncheon seminars.

She contributed to the treatise Partnerships & Joint Ventures Involving Tax-Exempt Organizations (Michael I. Sanders, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., chapters on partnerships and tax-exempt bonds (1994 & Supp. 1995)) and the 1989 Tax Guide for State Legislators (Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants, contributor/editor (January 1990)).

She also has authored the following tax publications

Ava is a sixth generation, native Washingtonian. A member of a national historical society, she has worked to advance the study of American history among elementary school students and provided legal counsel in historic preservation matters. She also performs pro bono services as a Maryland attorney.
